Tempered safety glass (ESG)

Heat-treated single-pane safety glass that breaks into small, blunt fragments instead of large shards.

Tempered safety glass (German: ESG, Einscheibensicherheitsglas) is the standard glass for shower enclosures. It is heated to ~620 °C and then cooled rapidly, giving it 4–5× the strength of normal glass. On breakage it disintegrates into small blunt cubes — much safer than normal glass shards. By European standard EN 12150, all shower enclosure glass must be ESG.
